California Will Be Key State In Primary Elections Tomorrow

US
California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota will head to the ballot box tomorrow for the next batch of primary elections.
  • Tomorrow's primaries will see a diminished role played by former president Donald Trump. Trump had intentions of challenging incumbent Senator John Thune (R-SD) in the South Dakota GOP Senate primary but no credible candidate materialised.
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) appears to have a straightforward path back into the Governor's mansion after surviving a recall election last September. None of the top Republicans who ran against Newsom are challenging for the seat.
  • Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) decided against retirement and also has a likely painless reelection campaign in Iowa.
  • There are 16 California primaries for the US House of Representatives. These include three Republican incumbents defending Democratic-leaning seats being targeting by Democrats.
  • California has 'all party primaries:' The two highest primary vote-getters will be on the ballot in November, regardless of party.
    • CA-03 is a new open seat which leans Republican. It will be targeted by both parties.
  • Republican incumbents facing Democrat challenges:
    • CA-22 incumbent Rep David Valadao (R-CA) voted to impeach Trump but hasn't faced considerable opposition from within GOP.
    • CA-27: Rep. Mike Garcia (R-CA) won two elections in 2020 but has seen his seat lean more Democrat in redistricting. Democrat candidate Christy Smith will challenge.
    • CA-48 Rep Michelle Steel (R-CA) won her seat against the prevailing Democrat swing in 2020.
  • The National Republican Congressional Committee has declared four California seats as targets: CA-13: Open, CA-26: Rep Julia Brownley (D-CA), CA-45: Rep Katie Porter (D-CA), CA-49: Rep Mike Levin (D-CA).
