Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal gov't faces a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons this afternoon. Despite losing support of the leftist New Democratic Party (NDP) earlier this month, the main opposition centre-right Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) is unlikely to get the votes to oust the Trudeau administration.
- Attempting to put the NDP and the separatist Bloc Quebecois (BQ) in a difficult position, the first motion from CPC leader Pierre Poilievre includes comments from both NDP and BQ leaders expressing their views of how unfit the Liberal gov't is to continue. Nevertheless, neither is set to back the motion. The BQ will back the gov't in return for legislation increasing benefits for pensioners. The NDP will not vote for the motion, claiming that bringing down Trudeau could usher in a CPC administration that would cut spending on public services.
- The vote is set for around 1530ET (2030BST, 2130CET). A second CPC motion outlines a list of accusations towards gov't in relation to tax, crime, cost of living etc and again forces the non-LPC members to back the gov't.
- A Commons debate on one of the motions will take place on 26 Sep, forcing the NDP and BQ into the difficult position of defending their support for the gov't despite sitting in opposition.
- With the minority LPC gov't relying on vote-by-vote support for all legislation going forward, the prospect of more confidence votes in the future is high.
