Caretaker Agriculture Minister Thamanat Says He Has Backing Of 29 PPRP MPs

THAILAND

Caretaker Agriculture Minister Thamanat Prompow announces that he has the support of 29 MPs from the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), who will join him in remaining part of the ruling coalition led by the Pheu Thai Party (PTP).

  • Thamanat says that the group of MPs will remain members of the PPRP until the party expels them amid legal restrictions that would make it difficult to leave the party outright. He claims that quitting the party would put their MP status at risk.
  • According to Thamanat, another 5 MPs from smaller parties are also part of the group led by himself, bringing the size of his faction to 34 lawmakers. This is in addition to the fact that he apparently controls majority of the PPRP's 40 MPs.
  • Separately, ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra told reporters that Thamanat's eligibility to serve in the cabinet will be double-checked by the Council of State due to his past conviction for drug smuggling in Australia.
  • The PPRP is yet to submit the list of its ministerial candidates ahead of the cabinet reshuffle, which follows the appointment of Paetongtarn Shinawatra to the PM position.
