  • High inflation weighing on disposable incomes weighed further on retail spending in September.
  • A sharp fall in UK retail sales was recorded in the CBI September report, following the August rebound. Orders decreased, led by internet orders as demand waned.
  • A (less severe) fall is anticipated for October and outlooks for the month ahead remain pessimistic.
  • Any renewed confidence due to today's announced Growth Plan could spill over into improved consumer spending by shielding households against high energy prices. The extent to which this will support the struggling UK retail industry remains to be seen.
