  • Retail sales rose significantly in Sep, accelerating at the fastest rate since Apr 2019 after declining in Aug.
  • Sep's uptick was driven by grocers reporting rising sales volumes with other positive contributions came from rising sales of "other normal goods", household furniture and hardware & DIY goods.
  • Oct sales are expected to be broadly stable.
  • Orders placed upon suppliers improved as well, rising to -14 after dropping to -27 in Aug.
  • The report notes that sales have been 8% lower than they would have been without the pandemic.
  • There is also a divergence of the difference sectors:
  • While household furniture and hardware stores are doing well, clothing and footwear continued to see falling sales volumes as consumer behaviour changed.
