CDU Still Falling Behind Greens, Even In Laschet's Home State

GERMANY

Latest opinion polls from Germany continue to show the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) falling behind or losing ground to the environmentalist Greens. A state-level poll in Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, shows the scale of the shift in support:

  • INSA/BILD: Greens: 26.0% (+7), CDU: 25.0% (-8), SPD: 20.0% (-3), FDP: 11.0% (+3), AfD: 9.0% (+1), LEFT: 4.5% (-0.5). Fieldwork 3-10 May 2021, changes w/30 Oct 2020. 2,014 respondents.
  • This poll will come as a significant blow to the CDU, given that the joint chancellor candidate of the Union parties (CDU and CSU) is incumbent North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Armin Laschet.
