Ceasefire Holds, Netanyahu Re-election Campaign at Risk

  • Ceasefire seen holding on Friday morning with both Israel & Palestine claiming victory after the Egyptian brokered ceasefire agreement came into effect at 2am with both Israel and Hamas saying it would be "mutual and simultaneous."
    • The ceasefire will face its first major test today when thousands of Palestinians attend weekly prayers at Al-Aqsa.
  • US says it will lead a multibillion dollar reconstruction effort in Gaza but seek to leverage aid by pressuring Hamas to give up its rocket arsenal.
    • Israel's foreign minister said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken would visit the region in the coming days.
  • While Palestinians also celebrated in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the mood for many Israelis was sombre.
    • Right-wing politicians criticised Netanyahu for ending the war too early in the face of mounting pressure from US President Joe Biden
    • adding risks to Netanyahu's possible re-election campaign which was benefitting from the conflict.
  • U.N. SG Guterres urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to go "beyond the restoration of calm to start a serious dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict."
    • But it was unclear if the terms of the cease-fire agreement had touched on any of those causes.
  • Despite claims by Hamas that it had secured the rights of Palestinians living in Jerusalem, Israel denied that it had given assurances over the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound or evictions in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem
