China Air Miles Slipping After Summer Peak

JET FUEL

Chinese domestic flight activity is slipping away from peak summer demand levels while international flights remain strong. Chinese flight recovery is one of the major drivers of global oil demand this year.

  • The number of scheduled domestic flights in China for the week of September 5-11 stands at 98,469, around 5.0% lower than the previous week according to BNEF research.
  • For Chinese international flights, compared to the start of September, the main Chinese airlines are adding 170 flights a week to over 3000 by the end of September.
  • Air travel between Korea and China exceeded 900,000 passengers in August, the highest since February 2020, following China's recent decision to reopen group tourism.
  • Last month, the monthly passenger movements between Singapore and China crossed the half million mark for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • China and the US have agreed to increase flights between each nation, but the numbers still lag well behind pre-pandemic.
