China Begins Military Drills Around Taiwan

TAIWAN

The People's Liberation Army has begun its "strategic" exercises around Taiwan which will last until Sunday, Chinese state media reported. The military said that it carried out precision strikes in eastern part of the Taiwan Strait.

  • Reuters cited a Taiwan source briefed on the matter, who said multiple Chinese aircraft briefly crossed the median line this morning. The source added that about 10 Chinese Navy vessels temporarily crossed the informal boundary.
  • Taiwan's Ministry of Defence tweeted that its armed forces "are operating as usual and monitor our surroundings in response to irrational activities from PRC, aiming for changing the status quo & destabilizing the region's security. We seek no escalation, but we don't stand down when it comes to our security and sovereignty."
  • The local aviation authority issued warnings, instructing aircraft to steer clear of areas where China's military is holding its exercises.
