China Condemns Tsai-McCarthy Meeting, Taiwan Issue An 'Uncrossable' Redline

US-CHINA

(MNI Australia) The China authorities have condemned the meeting between Taiwan President Tsai and US House Leader McCarthy. The Taiwan issue is an 'uncrossable' red line, and sees the meeting as creating tensions in the Taiwan Strait. It will also take strong, forceful measures to safeguard its sovereignty. The China Foreign Ministry noted that the US has been using Taiwan for a long period of time to contain China.

  • From the US side, McCarthy stated the meeting with Tsai was very productive and that the US must strengthen economic cooperation with Taiwan, particularly in terms of trade and technology, whilst continuing arms sales. He added it is not the US intention to escalate tensions with China.
  • McCarthy added that he doesn't have any plans to travel to Taiwan, but that doesn't mean he won't go at some stage.
  • The Tsai-McCarthy meeting was the first time a Taiwan leader had met with a US House speaker in the US.
  • The Taiwan military reportedly spotted a China aircraft carrier in its southeastern waters ahead of the meeting (see this Bloomberg link for more details). China's response today and over coming sessions will remain a focus point.
