China Could Avoid Tight Gas Supplies This Year

NATURAL GAS

China could avoid tighter gas supplies this year with cheaper coal supplies and weak export prospects slowing demand from industry according to a research report from Sinopec and BSC Energy Consulting.

  • Full-year demand is estimated at 371.3bcm and is below available supply of 387.5bcm. Industrial and power demand may continue to trend lower with ample coal supply and if gas prices stay elevated.
  • Total imports could increase by 15% yr/yr up to an estimated 170bcm and 44% of the overall supply with an extra 5.6bcm of pipeline gas supply from Russia and extra LNG from new long-term contracts.
