China & HK Equities Steady, Turnover Drops To Multi-Year Lows

ASIA STOCKS

China & Hong Kong equities markets are little changed today. There has been little in the way of market headlines or economic data so far this week, with focus turning to China's Industrial Production & Retail Sales on Thursday.

  • The HSI is unchanged today, slightly outperforming property which is down 0.75%, while HSTech Index is 0.60% lower, Mainland China Benchmarks are trading similar with the CSI 300 down just 0.10%, small-caps are faring slightly better with the CSI 1000 & 2000 up about 0.20%.
  • China's stock market turnover dropped to its lowest level since May 2020, with combined trading on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges reaching just $69.1b. This decline in share transactions comes as investors flock to government bonds amid a worsening economy and housing crisis, raising concerns among regulators. The ongoing downturn marks the fourth consecutive year of losses for China's stock market, as per BBG.
  • Foreign investors withdrew nearly $15b from China in Q2, marking a record outflow as pessimism about the economy deepens. This decline in foreign direct investment, combined with rising geopolitical tensions and economic slowdown, contrasts sharply with China's efforts to attract foreign capital, see chart.
