China, India and Turkey Picking up Russian Coal Flows in August as EU Ban Takes Place

Asia and Turkey have been the key beneficiaries of Russian coal as Europe wound down imports and introduced an import ban on the Russian fuel source Aug. 10.

  • China's imports of Russian coal have significantly risen since the war broke out according to Platts analysis. From 0.9 million mt in March, imports rose to 5.3 million mt in July, and 4.6 million mt in August so far.
  • Meanwhile, India's imports also increased from 0.7 million mt in March to 2.3 million mt in August to date.
  • In the Mediterranean region, Turkey's imports rose from 0.6 million mt in March 2022 to 2.1 million mt in August so far.
