HONG KONG
HONG KONG: China is set to announce a resolution for writing a piece of national
security legislation into Hong Kong law which could set the stage for a more
severe crackdown on any pro-democracy activities in the future by proscribing
'secession/subversive activity, foreign interference, and terrorism'.
- The motion is set to be presented at the plenary session of the National
People's Congress tomorrow, with the likelihood that a similar measure presented
to Hong Kong's Legislative Council would not pass in the current political
environment.
- The move comes hours after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo raised US
concerns that the treatment of Hong Kong's pro-democracy activists makes it
"more difficult to assess that HK remains highly autonomous from mainland
China". Should HK not be viewed as a highly autonomous entity it would not be
subject to special economic treatment under US law.
- Beijing swiftly condemned Pompeo's comments and US political action towards HK
more generally, saying the US is "blackmailing" HK with the HK Human Rights and
Democracy Act, passed in Nov 2019.
