China to Boost LNG Imports on Lower Prices

China has ramped up spot LNG purchases in the first quarter of this year after JKM prices fell to their lowest level since 2022 according to BNEF.

  • China purchased at least 45 spot LNG cargoes in 1Q 2024, the highest post-pandemic level.
  • LNG imports into China during the first half of this year could rise to 38mn tons, up by 15% on the year, due to cheaper spot LNG.
  • Chinese natural gas consumption is forecast to rise by 9% on the year to 203bcm in 1H 2024, driven by growth in the transport sector.
  • Pipeline natural gas imports are estimated to rise by 16% on the year to 27bcm in 1H 2024, amid an increase in Gazprom’s flows to China.
