China/U.S. Air Travel Shows Slow Recovery

Direct flights between China and the US are outpacing demand despite efforts to try and restore the routes to pre-pandemic levels.

  • Passenger loads on direct China-US flights have reached 75% this summer according to Li Hanming, a China-based aviation analyst and consultant.
  • The frequency of flights between China and the US in July stood at 23.6% of July 2019 levels according to OAG, with seat occupancy at 25 per cent compared with five years ago.
  • Difficulties with visas and a reduction in business travel are some of the main reasons cited for the slow recovery while an inability for U.S. carriers to use Russian air space have also had an impact.
