US: /CHINA: USTR publishes a notice in the Federal Register requesting comments
for new extensions on excluding tariffs of some imported items from China. This
would be extending the exemptions granted in September and October 2018, and
later extended in October 2019, from tariffs on Chinese goods that were imposed
in August 2018. The USTR is now deciding whether to extend the exemptions made
in October 2019 for "up to 12 months".
- Public comments are open until end-July.
- This applies to $16bln in goods covering a variety of products, so not a
game-changer. The USTR notes exemptions will be considered re "whether the
particular product is available only from China", whether duties "would cause
significant economic harm" to the requestor, or "whether the particular product
is strategically important or related to 'Made in China 2025' or other Chinese
industrial programs".
