China Will Visit Saudi Arabia On 7-9 Dec, Content Remains Unclear

OIL

The Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Saudi Arabia on 7-9 Dec for a Saudi-Chinese summit, but neither side has given details about the contents of the visit.

  • Xi Jinping's trip to Riyadh will also include a China-Arab summit in which 14 Arab heads of states are expected to attend.
  • Neither side has given details about the Chinese leader’s meeting with the Saudi royals, but the two countries could sign a deal on co-operation ranging from free trade to nuclear power. Oil could also be one of the fundamental topics of the meeting, as Saudi Arabia is China’s largest supplier of crude and China is the kingdom’s largest trading partner.
  • The US has been heavily campaigning against the meeting, due to estranged relations between the US and Saudi Arabia and the US and China, according to CNN.
  • The US and Saudi Arabia are still embroiled in a heated spat over oil production, which in October culminated in strong rhetoric and traded accusations when OPEC+ slashed cut by 2mbpd in an effort to “stabilize” prices.
  • Beijing has also been lobbying for use of its yuan currency in trade instead of the USD. Riyadh had previously threatened to ditch some dollar oil trades to confront possible US legislation exposing OPEC members to antitrust lawsuits.
