China’s Pipeline Natural Gas Imports Jump in May: OilChem

NATGAS

China’s imports of pipeline natural gas stood at 4.77m mt in May, up 16.99% on the month, according to OilChem citing GACC data.

  • The rise was attributed to growing electricity consumption amid higher temperatures in East and South China, coupled with robust vehicle LNG demand with natural gas cheaper than gasoil.
  • Total imports from Jan-May stood at 20.50m mt, up 9.41% on the year.
  • China’s pipeline natural gas imports are expected to rise further by 2.78% on the month to 4.90m mt in June.
  • The uptick in June will be driven by higher LNG prices, which make pipeline imports more competitive. Higher temperatures across China will also bolster demand.
