China’s Xi Hopes to See Talks on Ukraine

  • Chinese President Xi told former Russian President Medvedev that his nation would like to see talks on Ukraine, comments that come as Beijing tries to improve ties with Europe, Bloomberg report. Xi told Medvedev in Beijing that his administration has been “actively promoting peace and talks,” according to state broadcaster China Central Television.
  • Bloomberg report that Russia and Iran are building a new transcontinental trade route stretching from the eastern edge of Europe to the Indian Ocean, a passage that’s beyond the reach of any foreign intervention. The two countries are spending billions of dollars to speed up delivery of cargos along rivers and railways linked by the Caspian Sea.
  • Kommersant report that there will be no presidential address to the Federal Assembly in 2022 as it has been postponed until next year when there is more clarity in the Ukraine conflict.
  • President Putin and Defense Minister Shoigu will take part in the Defense Ministry’s annual meeting. Officials and company executives will speak at an energy forum in Moscow. Data-wise, PPI data and weekly CPI figures are on the docket, set for release at 1600 GMT/1900 local time.
