Chinese Air Travel Collapses

China's aviation regulator said on Thursday that air passenger traffic in April plunged 84.6% from a year earlier to 7.88 million trips and was only 14.8% of the pre-COVID level in 2019.

  • Shanghai-based China Eastern said passenger numbers collapsed 90.7% in April year on year - Shanghai International Airport saw passenger numbers down 98.9% in the same period.
  • The Chinese government is set to offer Chinese airlines subsidies to ride out covid related demand destruction.
