Chinese Ambassador To Hold Virtual Press Conference On UK-China Relations

UK

China's Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming is set to hold a virtual 'press conference' on Twitter at 1100BST (1200CET, 0600ET) to discuss the state of Sino-British relations.

  • UK gov'ts decision in early July to remove Chinese tech giant Huawei's equipment from its 5G network caused an immediate backlash from Beijing.
  • Liu issued a series of tweets this morning taken from an opinion piece he penned for the SCMP. Included comments such as, "In 2018, the company [Huawei] announced a further investment plan of GBP3 billion in the next five years, which is a positive vote for growth in Britain. Unfortunately, this will now be subject to uncertainties in light of the British government's recent decision."
  • "Britain could either choose to cooperate with Huawei and gain an edge in the era of the digital economy, or refuse such cooperation and give up leadership in a 5G-dominated future"
