Chinese Embassy In UK Holds Briefing On Hong Kong Electoral Law

HONG KONG

Minister at the Chinese Embassy in the UK is currently holding an online press conference on Hong Kong.

  • Subject is the electoral reform to Hong Kong agreed to at the National People's Congress meeting in Beijing. Says that the western media has been 'confused' over the change to the electoral system, and the briefing is intended to 'set the record straight'.
  • Why does China propose new electoral system?: Says China has fully implemented one country, two systems. Some use the electoral platforms of Hong Kong to "blatantly carry out anti-China destabilising activities to paralyse the LegCo. Some foreign and external forces interfered in HK affairs and provided support to anti-China forces....These moves reveal the existing mechanisms and electoral systems have loopholes that were exploited by anti-China forces. In light of such a situation China must take measures to remove existing institutional deficiencies and will ensure the governance of Hong Kong by patriots as the main body."
