Chinese Gas Imports Weak in July while Coal Imports Rise

China’s imports of natural gas, both via pipeline and as LNG, were weak in July, coming in at 8.70 million tonnes, down from 8.72 million in June and around 7% below last July’s 9.34 million based on official data out over the weekend.

  • For the January to July period, natural gas imports were down 9.6% to 62.21 million tonnes.
  • Coal imports rose to 23.52 million tonnes in July, up 23.9% from June.
  • Coal imports were still down 22.1% from last July, and for the first seven months of the year they were down 18% from the same period last year.
