Chinese Traffic Congestion Choppy May

OIL PRODUCTS

Chinese traffic congestion levels are choppy in May. The measure can be used as a proxy for road fuel demand as the economy reopens to see whether congestion trends at typical pre-restriction levels. It is now back below 2022 levels.

  • Congestion levels fell 28.8% in the week ending May 17 compared with the previous week.
  • The dip early in the month was likely because of the Labour Day holiday pulling less traffic into cities. It subsequently rebounded before falling off again.
  • The IEA was bullish on the Chinese rebound in its monthly report out this week saying that its recovery was at a faster than expected pace.
  • Chinese flying activity has also come off since early May after the Labour Day holiday peak.
