COAL: Rhine River Levels Recover to Allow Normal Shipping End Week

COAL

Rhine water levels at the Kaub measuring point are recovering after falling to the lowest since October on 2 September, data from the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration showed.

  • Water levels at Kaub stood at 1.34m on Wednesday, compared with 1.14m on Monday – the lowest since 25 October last year.
  • Water levels in the Rhine are rising but shallow water continues to hinder shipping on most of the Rhine in Germany including Duisburg, Cologne and the chokepoint of Kaub, but vessels are able to take on larger loads, traders told Reuters.
  • Traders said the region is expected to see more precipitation in the coming days, raising water levels, which will allow normal shipping later this week.
