Coalition Members Reportedly Discuss Compromise Proposals Amid Gallant-Levin Standoff

ISRAEL

Channel 12 reports that Israel's ruling coalition members are moving around the plenary hall and discussing last-minute compromise proposals, even as the second-reading vote on the "reasonableness" bill is on.

  • The TV channel claims that Defence Minister Yoav Gallant leads efforts to soften the legislation and find a negotiated solution, while Justice Minister Yariv Levin is a key figure in opposing any such moves.
  • This falls in line with an update from Kan, who report that Gallant has been pressuring Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to unilaterally soften the legislation, while Levin and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir were refusing to compromise.
  • Channel 12 also reported that Netanyahu refused to meet with IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi before the vote, amid rising concerns over the implications for national security, but the PM's office claims that the meeting was scheduled for 17:00.
  • The shekel has seemingly found some reprieve in these reports, with USD/ILS pulling back from its session high of 3.6462 to last trade at 3.6234, just shy of neutral levels.
