Colombia Increasing Fossil Fuel Production

ENERGY

Colombia is preparing to increase coal and petroleum production as demand for product exports increases according to the countries Energy Minister Diego Mesa.

  • Colombia has already begun sending coal exports to Ireland as the latter moves away from buying Russian supplies. Ireland stopped purchasing Colombian coal in 2016 on human rights concerns but is now buying again.
  • Poland has signed a deal with one of Colombia’s largest coal producers for one million tonnes of coal and expected to sign for another 2mn tonnes according to Mesa.
  • Colombia has also increased its coal exports to the Netherlands, Spain and Canada as they all look to replace Russian volumes.
  • Mesa said he expects Colombian oil production to reach at least 800,000 barrels per day by end of this year and up to 900,000 barrels per day by 2023.
