Election Commission Confirms That Election Results Could Be Certified Next Week

THAILAND

Election Commission Chairman Ittiporn Boonprakong told the media that the results of the recent general election will be certified next week, confirming earlier source reports suggesting that the official endorsement of at least 95% of MPS-elect could come on June 21.

  • The Election Commission is set to hold a special meeting on June 19 to facilitate the process of certifying both party-list and constituency MPs-elect. Local media outlets had earlier reported that the panel wanted to complete the process before the retirement of one of its members on June 28.
  • Once the EC certifies the election result, the House of Representatives has 15 days to convene and elect the new Speaker (who doubles as President of the National Assembly, i.e. joint houses of parliament). The subsequent meeting of the National Assembly elects a Prime Minister, pending royal assent.
