Congressional Path To Pushback Against Any Trump Fiscal Veto

US

Correction to earlier bullet, the comments flagged from McConnell were re: the NDAA Bill, as opposed to spending Bill matters (erroneous source used).

  • So, for clarity: The majorities that the spending omnibus Bill passed with are veto-proof (although Trump did not directly threaten a veto of the Bill). If he lets the clock run down on government funding (set to expire at the end of Dec 28 without the passage of the omnibus Bill) without vetoing the Bill, the issue will have to be taken up by the new Congress, which is set to be sworn in on Jan 3. Meaning the matter could take weeks to resolve, and would result in delays to the disbursement of stimulus checks for individuals and the expiration of some unemployment support measures.
  • House Speaker Pelosi has pointed to Democratic Party support for Trump's suggestion of $2,000 stimulus checks. We shall see what the Republican response to that matter is.
  • Trump's other major source of discontent re: the package seemed to surround U.S. money going offshore (a well-documented pet hate of his), so it will be interesting to see how this is addressed. The clock is ticking.
