Conservative Manifesto Targets Nuclear Energy Boost

The UK’s Conservative party promised to boost the country’s nuclear power generation in order to ensure security of supply, the party said in its manifesto.

  • The party is planning to install two new fleets of smaller modular reactors as well as a large reactor in North Wales if they get elected.
  • This would be one step for the UK to become a power next exporter according to the document.
  • In mid-May, the UK government said it is planning to build a new large-scale nuclear power plant in Wylfa, on the island of Anglesey, north Wales. The size of the planned nuclear facility was not disclosed. However, the government said it will be in similar scale to Hinkley and Sizewell, which both have a capacity of 3.26GW.
  • The UK is planning to increase its nuclear capacity to 24GW by 2050.
