Consumer Confidence Sees Largest Weekly Dip Since Nov

CANADA DATA
  • The Bloomberg Nanos consumer confidence index fell from 52.9 to 52.3 in the week to Jun 23.
  • It’s the largest weekly drop since Nov, having broadly trended higher since then before stabilising in mid-to-late May.
  • Despite the trend recovery off Oct/Nov lows back above 50 levels, it remains below 53.5-59 range seen in 2018 and 2019 prior to the pandemic.
  • The weaker print has little impact on GoCs which were already paring earlier gains in line with Tsys, with 2YY now -2.5bp and 10YY -4.5bps. It keeps 2s10s at a historically inverted -133bps with pressure helped by last week's strength in CAD retail sales.
