Consumer Confidence Sees Strong Lift Despite Job Security Falling

  • While only a small weekly survey, the Bloomberg Nanos consumer confidence index increased 1pt to 53.5.
  • It was the largest weekly increase since Apr 28, 2023, and saw the level of consumer confidence push through last year’s high of 53.1.
  • It remains below the rough range of 55-60 typically seen in pre-pandemic years.
  • The increase was concentrated in the expectations component (+1.2pt to 53.9) whilst the pocketbook increased (+0.8pts to 53.1) but in trend terms continues to move sideways/ebb slowly lower.
  • Despite the generally firmer prospects, current period job security touched its weakest reading in at least a month (46.7% secure vs 51.2% a month ago).
