Continental Markets Mixed, But US Futures Stabilise

Markets are still scratching their heads over the causes and catalysts behind Wednesday's abrupt stock market sell-off, which sent the e-mini S&P lower by 45 points over the course of 15 minutes. Markets seem to have settled on programmatic selling as the primary mover, but others eye disruptive tweeting from the Tesla CEO Musk on cryptocurrencies or profit-taking/position-squaring.

Ahead of the Thursday open, the outlook is far more sanguine, with markets a little mixed in Europe, but higher in the US. Across the continent, tech and healthcare names outperform, while the stalling oil price leads energy firms lower along with real estate.

With earnings season now pretty much concluded, the report card for US firms looks resolutely positive, helping keep the focus for equity futures on the all time highs at 3928.50.
