Cosatu Raises Stakes in Public Sector Wage Dispute

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Unions affiliated with Cosatu have launched an attack on their sister union (Sadtu), criticising their acceptance of the government’s wage offer and have pledged to plunge public services into chaos after minister Nxesi looked to unilaterally implement a 3% salary increase, according to IOL.
  • Other reports, however, cite sources as reporting that Cosatu have not yet made a decision on strike action. The union continues to argue for a 10% salary rise. The government have asked for mediators to intervene urgently.
  • News24 reports that the head of the protection unit for President Ramaphosa could be suspended due to his conduct surrounding the burglary at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Farm. He supposedly supplied false information, instructed for documents to be removed from an office and conducted his own investigation.
  • No tier 1 data due Tuesday, with August leading indicator the only release on the docket. Focus remains on the presentation of the MTBPS tomorrow at 2pm local time. MNI will release their full preview document including a summary of sell-side views later today.
