Could Be State Dept Brief On NS II Sanctions Waiver Today: Soc Media

US-RUSSIA

Following a report yesterday from Axios stating that the Biden administration is now set to waive sanctions on firms related to the Nord Stream II gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, there has been some unverified chatter on social media that the US State Department could hold a briefing on sanctions as early as today.

  • Should be noted that this briefing is as-yet unconfirmed.
  • There has been notable focus on the potential waiving of sanctions on the firms related to NSII, with the State Dep't set to only place sanctions on the ships involved in the construction of the pipeline.
  • This is seen by some as the Biden administration prioritising its relationship with Germany over containing Russian influence in Europe. The completion of the pipeline would give Moscow significant leverage over Europe in terms of gas supply, as well as isolating Ukraine, which acts as the route for most Russian gas to Europe.
  • The news comes as US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are due to meet on the edges of the Arctic Council summit in Iceland tomorrow.
