CPI Accelerates On Electricity Base Effect

AUSTRIA

Austrian CPI for December came in at 5.6% Y/Y (vs 5.3% prior) and 0.4% M/M (vs 0.2% prior) in the flash reading. The harmonized HICP measure came in at 5.7% Y/Y (vs 4.9% prior) and +0.5% M/M (0.2% prior).

  • This marks the first acceleration in the inflation rate since August.
  • The Y/Y incline can be largely attributed to a base effect as an electricity price brake took effect in December 2022. Additionally, "Fuel prices dampened inflation significantly less than in the previous months”, according to the Austrian Statistics Office.
  • There was no consensus expectation though this will marginally contribute to the anticipated eurozone headline inflation Y/Y acceleration in December - Austria has a weighting of 3.4% in the Eurozone HICP basket.
