Crude Vessel Sails Around South America amid Panama Canal Delays

OIL

A US bound vessel carrying crude oil is taking a several thousand-mile detour to by-pass the congestion in the Panama Canal amid a drought.

  • The Frankopan loaded around 0.6m bbl of heavy crude from Salina Cruz on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.
  • It is now headed towards the Magellan Strait near the Southern tip of South America, according to Bloomberg. Its final destination is the US Gulf Coast.
  • An ongoing drought and congestion at the Panama Canal have forced some vessels to consider alternate routes such as the Suez Canal or the Cape of Good Hope.
  • Vessels without reservations at the Panama Canal Face “indefinite delays”.
