Czechia Won't Follow V4 Peers In Banning Ukrainian Grain Imports

CZECHIA

Czech Agriculture Minister Zdenek Nekula said that Czechia is not planning to ban imports of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products and deems such measures imposed by Poland, Hungary and Slovakia as being in breach with EU and WTO rules, Czechia's public broadcaster CTK reports.

  • In the latest days, the three countries unilaterally closed their borders to the imports of some Ukrainian agricultural commodities that were allowed to be transited to destination countries via Eastern Europe due to the closure of Ukraine's seaports.
  • However, supply bottlenecks and improper monitoring resulted in cheap Ukrainian agricultural commodities piling up in the transit countries, depressing local prices and causing discontent among farmers.
  • Nekula said in a press release that the European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski (nominated for the position by Poland) told him that such unilateral measures are unacceptable for the Commission.
  • Poland has started talks with Ukraine to strike a new deal on grain transit, while EU Agriculture Ministers are set to discuss the matter on April 25.
