Def Sec: No Comment On China Missile Test

On a visit to the nation of Georgia, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III has stated that the 'US closely watches China's advanced weapons development' but that he had no comment on the reports originating in the FT that Beijing tested a hypersonic missile over the weekend.

  • China has denied that a hypersonic missile test took place, with foreign ministry spox Zhao Lijian saying that the FT report was inaccurate, saying that "This [test] was not a missile, this was a spacecraft...This is of great significance for reducing the cost of spacecraft use."
  • A hypersonic missile has a trajectory that circles the entire planet before falling on its target, and could be designed to avoid current missile detection systems.
