Defeated GOP Sen. Perdue Says He Will Not Run For GA Seat In 2022

US

David Perdue, who served as a Republican US Senator for the state of Georgia from 2015 to 2021, has stated that he will not run for the Georgia senate seat up for election in 2022.

  • Perdue was defeated by Democrat Jon Ossoff in a dramatic run-off election on January 5, which tipped the balance of the Senate in favour of the Democrats thanks to VP Kamala Harris' tie-breaking vote.
  • Previously Perdue had filed papers to run in 2022 against Raphael Warnock (D-GA), who defeated Republican Kelly Loeffler in the simultaneous special election run-off on the same day.
  • While Perdue lost in 2021, as a prospective 2022 candidate he would hold broad name recognition with Georgia voters, and as such would likely have put up a strong challenge against Warnock in a state that remains a political battleground.
  • Holding onto Warnock's seat could prove crucial to the Democrats in seeking to hold onto both chamber of Congress in the 2022 mid-terms.
