Defence Min Galant Agreed To Postpone But Not Cancel Judicial Overhaul Statement-Ynet

ISRAEL

Ynet reports that Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Galant told his aides that he wants to see the final outline of Prime Minister's Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial overhaul before deciding whether to make a public appeal to pause the reforms.

  • People close to Galant told Ynet that the defence chief made it clear to Netanyahu that "he agreed only to postpone the statement he was planning to deliver last night - but not to cancel it."
  • The news website suggests that Galant could make his statement as soon as next week if he judges that the Prime Minister's judicial reforms are compromising national security.
  • Sources told Ynet that Galant personally supports the reforms but believes that Israel's deterrence capabilities should take priority. He has reportedly informed Netanyahu about a large number of reservists who refused service.
  • This trend has reportedly deepened after Netanyahu's speech last night, as "dozens of active reserve pilots" refused to report to squadrons for training flights next week, with the crisis within the IDF expected to continue.
