JAPAN
JAPAN: Defense Minister Tomomi Inada has decided to resign over her alleged
involvement in a ministry cover-up of daily activity logs on peacekeeping
operations in South Sudan, Japanese media reported Friday. Her resignation was
widely expected as the public support for the cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo
Abe has continued to slide over its handling of political scandals, casting
doubt over his leadership ahead of parliamentary elections expected next year.
Tetsuro Kuroe, the ministry's top bureaucrat, and Toshiya Okabe, the chief of
staff at the Ground Self-Defence Forces, are also expected to resign. Japanese
PM Abe has publicly apologised and says he takes full responsibility for those
he appointed to ministerial positions. Abe is expected to announce his cabinet
reshuffle next week.
- Abe may get a boost from the news yesterday that Democratic Party leader
Renho, the main opposition party, has resigned. While this may alleviate some of
the threat that the ADP will lose power, Abe will still be under pressure from
his own party. The resignation could provide an opportunity for Koike to build
on her victory in the Tokyo elections recently.
