Dep FM-US & NATO Involvement Could Lead To 'Catastrophic Consequences'

Speaking at a conference on disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov states that "The greatest strategic threat comes from the US & NATO fanning the conflict in Ukraine...US & NATO involvement could lead to a direct nuclear powers' clash with catastrophic consequences." This rhetoric is not new from Russian officials, who have frequently warned of the raised prospect of nuclear conflagration. Nevertheless, coming at the same time as Russia's jettisoning of New START treaty, it will garner some Western attention.

  • On Russia's suspension of the New START nuclear treaty, Ryabkov alleges that, "the US was using information gained under New START treaty to help Ukraine attack Russia's strategic sites.'
