Dep PM-Russia To Review Turkey Cooperation If It Sells Drones To Ukraine

RUSSIA

Russia's state-owned Tass agency reporting comments from Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov stating that the gov't would review its cooperation with Turkey if Ankara were to go ahead with drone sales to Ukraine.

  • When asked about the issue by reporters, Borisov stated "We will look (at the prospect) specifically in each individual case". Previously Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned countries of supporting the 'militaristic' intentions of Ukraine.
  • Turkey's Ahval News reported comments from Vadim Nozdrya, head of Ukraine's state-owned arms trading firm Ukrspetsexport, made in October 2020 that the Ukrainian army planned to purchase 48 drones from Turkish manufacturers Baykar and Roketsan.
  • The issue of Russo-Turkish military cooperation remains a major cause of tension between Ankara and other NATO member states. Turkey purchased Russian-made S-400 missile systems for use in the Syrian conflict, despite the protestations of Brussels and Washington, D.C.
  • Turkish-made drones are viewed as having had a major impact on the outcome of conflicts in Syria, Libya, and Nagorno-Karabakh, where Azerbaijan routed Armenian forces thanks to Ankara's military support.
