Deputy President Mabuza Steps Down As MP Ahead Of Cabinet Reshuffle

BusinessDay and News24 report that South Africa's Deputy President David Mabuza has formally resigned as a member of parliament, which has been confirmed to the ruling ANC party's chief whip.

  • Mabuza's resignation is another step towards the imminent Cabinet reshuffle, with President Cyril Ramaphosa widely expected to appoint a new second-in-command and announce the nomination of a new Electricity Minister.
  • Paul Mashatile will likely take over as the nation's Deputy President after winning the race for ANC deputy leadership at the recent national elective conference. It is an ANC tradition to bring government roles into line with party roles.
  • Mabuza recently indicated his intention to resign and make way for Mashatile to replace him, but President Ramaphosa appeared to be in no rush to complete the rejig of his administration amid factional tensions within the ANC.
