Douglas Ross Announced As New Leader Of Scottish Conservatives

UK

MP for Moray Douglas Ross, who resigned from Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Cabinet after No.10 senior adviser Dominic Cummings broke lockdown restrictions, has been named as the next leader of the Scottish Conservatives.

  • Ross will lead the party in Scotland into the next elections to the Scottish Parliament, due to be held in May 2021.
  • The Scottish Conservatives are the second-largest party in Holyrood, behind the governing Scottish National Party (SNP), and are the largest pro-Union party.
  • Ross faces a tough fight in retaining support for the Conservatives in Scotland. In the previous election in 2016, the party was led by the popular MSP Ruth Davidson, while now the party in England is led by Boris Johnson, a figure with little popularity in Scotland.
  • There is major focus on the next Scottish parliament elections, with the view that if the pro-independence SNP of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wins a majority of seats is makes the prospect of a second Scottish independence referendum more likely.
  • A majority of opinion polls carried out since the December 2019 general election show more support for independence than for remaining as part of the UK.
