EU COMMISSION: dpa-Von Der Leyen Was Hospitalised w/Pneumonia

EU COMMISSION

Germany's dpa claims that earlier this week European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was hospitalised due to a severe case of pneumonia. dpa writes "she was temporarily treated in hospital. According to information from the German Press Agency, the 66-year-old spent a total of around a week in the University Hospital in Hanover." The report claims VdL is now out of hospital and working from home. dpa: "The Commission said that von der Leyen had never been in intensive care. She had also been in daily contact with her team in the hospital."

  • While von der Leyen's illness was well-known, the Commission did not reveal her hospitalisation until after she had been discharged, previously only saying she had a severe case of the respiratory illness and was continuing to work from home. Eddy Wax at Politico posts on X: "...the European Commission literally kept [the hospitalisation] secret. That's shocking."
  • There could be some pushback against the Commission for the perceived secrecy of her stay in hospital. As Politico notes "[VdL] has stopped short of handing off her duties at the Berlaymont, which has led to delays in unveiling key policies at the start of her second term as Commission president."
  • A key tentpole of VdL's second Commission, the 'Competitiveness Compass' - intended to be an economic doctrine arising from the 2024 reports from Mario Draghi and Paolo Gentiloni on EU competitiveness - has already been pushed back indefinitely.
