Dr Swati Dhingra appointed to MPC

BOE
  • Dr Swati Dhingra has been appointed as an external member of the MPC to replace Michael Saunders when his second three year term ends.
  • Saunders' last MPC meeting will be on 4 August with Dhingra starting her role on 9 August.
  • Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said her "experience in international economics will bring valuable new expertise to the MPC. I am delighted to appoint her to this role and look forward to seeing her contribution to policymaking in the coming years."
  • She doesn't seem to have any public recent comments about the recent increase in inflation.
  • She has written on the economic consequences of Brexit here.
  • She also wrote a paper around 15 months ago: The impacts of Covid-19 and Brexit on the UK economy: early evidence in 2021.
  • Dhingra's expertise according to the LSE website is in international economics, trade policy and industrial organisation. So she will probably have some useful insights on the disruptions to supply chains. But how that factors into her thinking for monetary policy is unclear.
  • A copy of her CV is available here.
