Dramatic Shift In Party Preference Underscores Biden’s Poor Performance

US

A Gallup report has shown that the perceived poor performance of President Joe Biden's administration has been reflected in a shift in stated party preference.

  • The shift in party allegiance can be broadly correlated with high levels of inflations seen in the second half of 2021 and tracks the sinking approval ratings of President Joe Biden. The GOP advantage of five points over the Democrats is the highest by the Republican party since 1991.
  • Another trend to note is the uptick in voters who identify as independent (no party allegiance). The increase in self-identified independents make the 2022 midterms more challenging to forecast. If the Democrats can get inflation in check, and pandemic pressures have eased, then the independent vote could deliver a better than predicted outcome for Democrats in November.
